Whatever approach to classroom management a teacher utilizes, the goal should be to enhance the learning environment and promote positive student growth.

How to effectively manage a classroom is frequently the source of apprehension for many teachers, especially for new teachers. In part, this anxiety is due to the fact that there is not one set plan for classroom management that will prove successful in every classroom setting. Although different classroom circumstances will necessarily dictate altering the management strategies utilized, there are guidelines that are useful in helping teachers to formulate effective classroom management strategies.

Prior to Developing a Classroom Management Plan

Before determining effective classroom strategies, a teacher needs to consider the group of students who will comprise the class. A teacher needs to view such factors as the age of the children and the number of students in the class. Additionally, the teacher must assess the make-up of the individual students.

When a teacher takes the time to learn about each student who will be a part of the class, it will improve the teacher’s ability to determine the needs of each student. Recognizing the individuality of each child in the class will aid the teacher in establishing a positive relationship with each individual student. The development of positive relationships with students will help to lay the groundwork for effective classroom management.

It is also important for a teacher to clearly understand his/her limits and to be aware of his/her goals for the classroom. In order to fashion an effective classroom management strategy, a teacher must be aware of what will constitute a plan that he/she is comfortable with enforcing. An important element of any classroom management plan is the teacher’s belief in the plan that results in a desire to carry out the management strategies on a consistent basis.

Basic Guidelines When Developing Classroom Management Strategies

There are some important general guidelines to keep in mind when developing a plan for the classroom. As a teacher decides on the rules of the classroom, he/she needs to focus on stating the rules in a clear and concise way. Rules need to be straightforward so that students will know what is being expected of them.

When rules are stated in a positive manner, students will find it easier to understand how they should behave during class time. The guidelines for effective classroom management should contribute to the positive development of each student as well as to the benefit of the classroom as a whole.

When deciding on a short, simple set of rules, a teacher must be sure that these written rules of behavior and any related follow through for non-adherence are enforceable. From the start of the school year, a teacher must ensure that each student comprehends the rules. Equally important is the consistent application of the rules and any necessary follow through. Empty promises and empty threats do not equate to effective classroom management.

Ways to Help Ensure Effective Classroom Management

Once a teacher has determined the classroom strategies he/she believes will create an environment that will be conducive to learning, it is time to examine how to successfully implement that plan. There are many suggestions that can aid a teacher in providing students with a setting that will nurture their growth and development within the classroom setting.

One of the critical elements for successful implementation of effective classroom strategies is for the teacher to be well prepared for each class. By being well planned, the teacher can avoid periods of time when the students are not actively involved in class. It is frequently these moments of inactivity when a student will choose to stray from the rules. Additionally a well-prepared teacher is more likely to be able to guide the class according to his/her lesson plans.

By consistently starting class on time, students will learn to come to class ready to get to work at the onset of class. The teacher can maintain the involvement of students more readily by providing the class with a variety of activities that require them to remain actively engaged. The use of several shorter class segments that target the different means of learning will help to keep students interested and on task.

The majority of teachers find it beneficial to include a series of consequences and a set of rewards as part of their classroom management plan. When the rules are explained at the beginning of the school year, the discussion should include an explanation of the procedure for non-compliance. Students should also be made aware of rewards that they can earn through their co-operative efforts.

Focusing on the Positive for Effective Classroom Management

While there is not a single, clearly laid out plan that will result in effective classroom management, there are guidelines that can assist in the implementation of a successful classroom management strategy. Teachers can improve the likelihood of a well run and productive classroom by focusing on positive strategies. By creating a classroom atmosphere where students clearly understand what is expected of them and find themselves involved and challenged by classroom activities, a teacher can create an atmosphere that encourages learning and positive behavior.
